I want to publicly offer my deepest gratitude, admiration, and love to Lurie Daniel Favors—a brilliant, beautiful, talented, intellectually gifted Black woman whom I am honored to consider a sister in this work.
Lurie continues to stand unapologetically for Black people. She advocates for us. She protects our stories. She names the forces threatening our lives and communities. She uses her platform not merely to discuss Black people, but to affirm our humanity, defend our dignity, and insist that the historical and contemporary violence directed toward us be taken seriously.
During her recent program, “Black People Hunting Season,” Lurie devoted significant time to reading and discussing multiple passages from my book. Hearing my words carried through her voice—and placed within such an urgent conversation about the conditions confronting Black people—moved me more deeply than I can adequately express.
An author spends countless hours researching, writing, questioning, grieving, remembering, documenting, and attempting to give language to realities that society would often prefer to deny. It is therefore an extraordinary gift when someone does not simply mention your work, but studies it, engages it, teaches from it, and brings it before a wider community with care and conviction.
Lurie has done that for me repeatedly.
She has continued to reference my books on her platform, including Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and The Psychopathy of Whiteness, and she has treated the scholarship with a seriousness and generosity for which I will always be grateful. She understands that these books are not abstract intellectual exercises. They are diagnoses of the legal, political, psychological, cultural, and institutional conditions under which Black people have been required to survive.
And she understands that this work is ultimately about protecting Black life.
Lurie, thank you for continuing to rep for us.
Thank you for continuing to stand up for us.
Thank you for loving Black people publicly, fiercely, intelligently, and without apology.
Thank you for bringing history, analysis, cultural memory, and moral clarity to your audience. Thank you for creating a platform where our experiences are neither minimized nor sanitized. Thank you for recognizing my scholarship and for trusting my words enough to share them with the people who listen to and learn from you.
Your acknowledgment means even more because of who you are and what you represent. You are a formidable thinker, educator, advocate, attorney, cultural commentator, and truth-teller. You demonstrate that intellectual rigor and profound love for Black people are not opposing forces. In your work, they strengthen one another.
I see you.
I honor you.
I appreciate you.
And I cannot thank you enough.
You are my sister in the work, and I am profoundly grateful that we are carrying this responsibility during the same moment in history.
With immense love, gratitude, and respect,
